I try to make an effort to get out of the house on weekends if I don’t have plans. Even if the weather is a bit grim I think it’s important to get some walking in and see what’s going on in the neighbourhood.
I’ve been meaning to get to Columbia Road Flower Market for a few months so I finally remembered on a Sunday. It’s about a 25 minute walk from my house to the south east, just a few streets from Brick Lane. I didn’t really know what to expect and I didn’t plan on buying anything because I forgot to get cash and had about £6. It was such a cute little street full of fun shops and cafes serving brunch, it was PACKED! (The weather wasn’t even very good! Threatening to rain and I swear I heard some thunder).
Once I was able to squeeze my way into the throngs of people, I saw loads of flowers and plants – yes, that is what I expected… It’s kind of funny though, the flowers that were most common here at the markets are not the same as in Southern California. You sort of forget things like that. Here there were loads of bulb flowers and plants, tulips from the Netherlands, and lots of thistles!
In the end I got a small pot of daffodils and a small pot of hyacinth both for £1 as well as some thistles and hyacinth.
Definitely worth a visit if you find yourself wanting a wander on a Sunday morning.
